Why Spanish...?
En un esfuerzo por aumentar mi comprensión, compasión y empatía por las dificultades del idioma inglés de mis compañeros de trabajo mexicanos, comencé a estudiar español en 2019. Disfruto desafiarme a mí misma para leer libros, ver películas, escuchar música y cambiar la configuración de mis dispositivos al español.
Para comprender mejor la cultura hispana, llamo de 1 a 3 amigos a la semana para practicar español, hacer un esfuerzo por entablar amistad con personas que no hablan inglés y estar involucrado con la población hispana local en Cleveland. Recibí el certificado de español de negocios de la Universidad de Wisconsin - Madison en 2021 con la intención de dominar el idioma para 2026.
In an effort to increase my understanding, compassion, and empathy for my Mexican coworkers language struggles in English, I started studying Spanish in 2019. I enjoy challenging myself to read books, watch movies, listen to music, and change the settings on my devices to Spanish.
To better understand the Hispanic culture, I call 1-3 friends weekly to practice Spanish, make an effort to befriend individuals who do not speak English, and am involved with the local Hispanic population in Cleveland. I received my Business Spanish Certificate from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 2021 with the intent to be bilingually proficient by 2026.

Pros and cons to telling my team I was learning Spanish: they started to speak Spanish with me, but they made me order my own tacos in Mexico. Understanding the chef asked me what tipo de tortilla (kind of tortilla) I wanted, I responded with flor (flower) to which he stared at me. I walked over to my friend "Cómo se dice flour en español?" "Harina." I turn to the chef "Arena, por favor." He looked at me confused again. I stood there awkwardly and asked again. Nothing. I ordered corn tortillas. Sitting down at the table, I asked "Are you sure arena means flour in Spanish?" "No, Amy." he chuckled, "Arena is sand. Harina is flour."
